 WHERE I LIVE: CEDAR MOUNTAIN
Submitted by Christine Pace

At about 3,000' elevation Cedar Mountain is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.  Cedar Mountain is in Transylvania County which has over 250 waterfalls and so is becoming quite the tourist destination;  the DuPont State Recreational Forest is right across the street from my house, with access to their two lakes within a half mile from my driveway.  Popular waterfalls within DuPont Forest are Hookers Falls, High Falls and Triple Falls.  Much filming of the recent block-buster movie "The Hunger Games" was shot within the DuPont State Forest!  All summer there are Hunger Games "tours" scheduled for this area, so it is very active!

Brevard is our county seat, and Main Street Brevard is about twelve miles from my house.  Brevard is known widely for their white squirrels and holds a "White Squirrel Festival" on Memorial Day weekend each year.  These crittes are not albino but have dark brown eyes and are quite striking!  White squirrels make up about a third of our total squirrel population.

To the South, Cedar Mountain sits just across the uppermost part of the Greenville, South Carolina county line, at Caesar's Head State Park.  I attend the monthly meetings just outside of Greenville at the "Palmetto Gourd Patch".  Dickie and Linda Martin, owners of "Ghost Creek Gourds" in Laurens SC are who I go to for good, thick-shelled and already clean gourds!  They are about one hour and forty-five minutes from me, in the hot flat lands.

This will be the third year we will hold a "Mountain Gourd Gathering" right here in Cedar Mountain!

We have teachers Marianne Barnes, Peggy Ash, Debbie Wilson, Betsey Sloan and Betty Bloomfield already slated for this August 17 & 18TH, and Ghost Creek Gourds will be there with their gourds for sale!

Oh, and I must mention that I will be the only "painting" teacher at this 'gathering, helping others to create beautiful Lady Pins out of gourd shards, or scraps.  Folks from Upper South Carolina and Western North Carolina gather for this informal two days of fun, teachings and fellowship.

And so it is I decided to paint a piece of beautiful Cedar Mountain North Carolina all around a large gourd(pictured)!  I hope one day you'll be able to visit, and drop me a line before you come!
