Charming Gourds - Lucky 8

The Chinese word for gourd, hulu, has many auspicious associations.  In some dialects, the character hu has a similar pronunciation to fu which means "happiness" or "good fortune".  Therefore, saying hulu for gourd would sound similar to fulu which means "happiness and rank (as in attaining a high government office)".

The Chinese consider the number "8" to be very auspicious and an omen for good luck (see Hidden Meaning of Symbols).  The gourd, as the gourd charm below illustrates, resembles the number "8".

The gourd is the symbol of Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals, which represents his power to free his soul from his body.  It also symbolizes longevity and the ability to ward off evil spirits.

The gourd is said to embody heaven and earth, and to contain spiritual energy that wards of evil spirits. It is often hung for protection above door or window, at the head of a bed, or in a vehicle.

Some Taoist monks and the deities even use the Hu Lu (Wu Lou) to absorb bad or harmful evil spirits into it for imprisonment.  A natural form of wu lou is believed to be better than from imitations of other materials

Wu Lou (also called Hu Lu, gourd, calabash or “giver of life”) is one of the most significant tools to enhance and cure feng shui problems.  The shape of wu lou is also said to symbolize the earth (the bottom half of the bottle) and heaven (the top half) united together.

Feng shui is a complex body of knowledge that teaches us how to balance the energies of any given space so that health and good fortune can be obtained for people inhabiting it.  It is the art of placing and arranging space and matter in the correct manner so that harmony with the environment can be achieved.

In order to activate the wu lou for your feng shui puposes, you need to tie either a red ribbon or red thread around its ‘valley’. Some feng shui masters even paint the natural wu lou in gold color and add special coins to absorb wealth luck.
Display a wu lou (as many as you can afford) in any part of the house to create good health and dissolve negative chi (energy).  Qi or Chi (pronounced "chee" in English) is a movable positive or negative life force.

Hang two natural wu lous (or made from metal) on both sides of your bed to heal sickness or ailments as well as to rejuvenate the energy of the sick people in order to speed up the recovery.

Special Tips : Calabash works best without any red colored items attached to it such as a red ribbon or painting. It is best in golden color. Calabash must be hollow and has a hole to absorb the sickness energy
